Abstract
English is the important subjects for the young learners. As young learners, students must be able to speak and write fluently in English for now it is important subject in elementary school. Listening to the teacher in class is a boring activity for the students especially, if they can not understand English language. So, the teacher should try hard to make the material as attractively as possible so that the students are interested in it. Grammar is an element that must be learnt in learning foreign language. However, it is not quite interesting for the students who learn English since grammar contains rules and patterns that are sometimes difficult to understand and memorize. The writer proposed the use of games to teach grammar for elementary students in fifth grade especially, in learning Simple Present Tense. In this study the writer attempted to find the effect of using games in teaching grammar compared to questions test. The subjects of this study were two classes consisting altogether 63 students of VA and VB students of SDN Tenggilis Mejoyo elementary school. Students of VB belonged to the experimental group and students of VA the control group. The study found, through t-test calculation and SPSS, there is a significant difference in the students‘ achievement in learning Simple Present Tense between the two groups. The students who were taught using games have better grammar achievement than those who were taught using questions test.
