Abstract

A genre of music from pesantren, namely qashidah shalawat has specific characteristics in its instrument, arrangement, song, and video clip production that are affiliated to tradition and religiousness. However, lately, some innovations are found in several albums of qashidah shalawat. The innovations are in the instrument and arrangement of the music and the design of the video clips. Today, pop characteristics are also found in the design of the video clip. That phenomenon invites an interest in studying the ideology behind the production of qashidah shalawat in pop nature. In fact, pesantren is identified as sub-cultural community that has filtering system to the influence of outside culture. This article aims to analyze the ideologies that are demonstrated through one of video clips of qashidah shalawat album entitled ―Muhammad Nabina‖ produced by Pesantren of Tambakberas. The analysis implements two level steps of signification recommeneded by Barthes, including the step of connotation and denotation. The result of this study gives understanding that santri adopt pop culture to ―Muhammad Nabina‖ video clip. Here, Modernization becomes the motivation of that adoption. Pop nature is not an identification of modernization, but the fact that the Pesantren is not in conventional style of music creation is identification that the Pesantren has a characteristic of open mind and flexibility. This finding evaluates the understanding that pesantren is sub-cultural community. However, in many parts of the video clip, the maintenance of Islamic morality is still described clearly enough.
