Abstract

This thesis explores the denial issue as part of defense mechanism as a subcategory of Psychoanalysis theory, in The ODESSA File novel. The theory that is going to be used is Freudian Psychoanalysis, due to its explicit stress on the relations between sexuality and common human conduct compared to its other branches. As such, the object novel will mainly be analyzed qualitatively. The steps involved concerning with the analysis involved close reading of the novel to find the primary issue for analysis, then research for journals, articles and other kinds of materials to support the analysis. The thesis begins with a brief overview of Psychoanalysis theory as a whole, as well as some of its primary tenets, before narrowing to those of Freudian. In the analysis part, it will further explore the instances of denial of Peter Miller (the novel’s protagonist) in comparison with that of Alfred Oster—a member of an organization named ODESSA—before assessing the relations. In conclusion, the writer discovered that the instances of denial and trauma are closely intertwined and that both of which could in fact be resolved through apparently trivial means. The conclusions ended with some statements on the final state of relationships between the two parties, as well as some notions about neo-Nazism, a post-WWII ideology, as a prospective issue for future researches.
