Abstract

The study of ethnography of communication does not only see the culture, but also the language aspect that supports the communication interaction in a community. Chinese people in Surabaya are minority community but have a lot of impacts to the culture and language. This study was conducted to find out how Chinese Indonesian culture and language, especially in Hokkien language, gives effect to the society. Furthermore, this study can help Linguistic Anthropologists understand the influence of Chinese Indonesian culture and language and than Linguistic Anthropologists can develop more the culture and language that exist in Indonesia. To gain the data, ethnographic method is used as an approach that directly doing the participant observation, interview, and transcribes the communication. As conclusion of the finding, Chinese Indonesians talk to Javanese using bahasa Indonesia and Hokkien language at the same time. The Javanese people in here understand what the meaning is and they used some of Hokkien vocabulary in their daily life. As conclusion, ethnography of communication can be used to reveal language and culture of a community or group or several ethnic in society.
