Abstract

This research studies Orientalism in Tomb Raider movie. Specially, it discusses representation of Orient and Occident, and also finds narrative and nonnarrative aspects in that movie. Said suggest that the Orientalism can also express the strength of the West and the Orient’s weakness seen by the West. In this research, the writer is tries to show the Orientalism which is proposed by Said. In analyzing Narrative and non-Narrative aspects in the movie, the writer uses Orientalism theory. The main concepts used in this study are the concepts of East and West position in the world. Orientalism in the Tomb Raider movie is portrayed at the time when the East people help the West to destroy the statue at the temple in Cambodia. The West people have money to pay slavery (East), while the East have man power to get money from West. Eventually, at the end of the movie, Lara (West) succeeds to save the world and destroys the Triangle Of Light. In conclusion, this research shows strong impression of what Said has argued in his book about Orientalism, mentioning that the West is the actor and the Orient is a passive reactor. It means that West is always as a hero who saves the East, while the East always waits to be rescued.
