Abstract

This study attempts to identify and analyze how wealth as a symbol of power is portrayed in George R. R. Martin’s novel entitled “A Storm of Swords”. Based on Karl Marx theory about Capitalism that is used in this study, it focused on one of the noble families within the novel named House of Lannister as a capitalist, since they use their money in order to get what they want and provide what the proletariats needed from them. Identifying this novel using Capitalism of Marxism shows that the House of Lannister has several ways in using their money which give them what they wanted and also providing the proletariats' need towards wealth. The House of Lannister’s aim is to gain more economic and political power. Even though the House of Lannister could get what they want, not all of them were realized because many proletariats do not want to work for them. In other way, House of Lannister is able to set a great power that they can use by their way of using their wealth. Based on the findings above, this study intends to point out the portrayal of the money as a symbol of power that shown by the Lannisters.
