Abstract

There are at least three dialects exist in Probolinggo, they are Madurese, Probolinggo, and Jakarta. The writer tries to analyze the phenomenon of language attitude of young Madurese people in Probolinggo toward Madurese dialect as their mother tongue, Probolinggo dialect as the local dialect and Jakarta dialect as the most popular dialect among young people in Indonesia. The respondents are students of SMK Negeri 1 Kraksaan, Probolinggo. They live in Probolinggo and their parents are native speakers of Madurese language and use it at home. The result is expected to suggestions for linguists to decide the best way for language planning in the future and give contribution for everyone who is interested in sociolinguistics especially in the study of language varieties. This study applies a questionnaire adopted from Annika Hohenthal (1998) about four aspects of the respondent’s attitude, i. e. affective/ integrative dimension, pragmatic/ instrumental dimension, attitudes toward Madurese language as the mother tongue, and other related aspects that are closely related to the exposures of the language. In the affective/ integrative dimension, Probolinggo dialect has the highest average point as the respondents tend to identify themselves as Probolinggo people. In the pragmatic dimension, Jakarta dialect has the highest average point considered as a passport to prestige and success. Meanwhile, Probolinggo dialect is considered important for Indonesia. This local dialect can be considered another significant characteristic of Indonesia which has not only diverse cultures and thousands of islands, but also a wide variety of unique dialects.
