Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the abuse of power is conducted by Caligula in Albert Camus’ drama Caligula. This analysis will analyze the character and characterization, the conflict, and the setting of the drama. However, the abuse of power done by the main character can be done because of some idea which is pushing him to do those actions. So that, the writer also wants to find out what factors influences Caligula in practicing abuse of power. This study will use New Criticism study, in character and characterization theory by Brockett, the theory of conflict by Perrine and the theory of setting by Griffith. The result of the analysis shows that Caligula as Roman Emperor uses his power to abuse his people in order to erase the suffering and unhappiness. So that he wants to change this condition, he wants to ends up the suffering and creates happiness for the Rome, by creating the death. This finding brings the Rome to the miserable. He uses his power to reach his desire, i.e. challenging the gods. This truth becomes the factor that drives him in practicing the abuse of power.
