Abstract

The close relation between ethnicity and language opens linguistics phenomena. Language is one element of ethnic identities and it strengthen the ethnic membership. But as a part of culture, language always changes and develops. It opens many linguistic phenomena. This thesis tries to describe one of linguistic phenomenon emerged from this relation. As an ethnic group, Arab people in Kelurahan Ampcl Surabaya use their own language to strengthen their ethnic membership and maintain their own traditions and culture. They call it Kalam Jamaah. As a hybrid lanhruage, Kalam Jamaah is influenced by Indonesian (Malay) and Javanese in the lexical stock and grammatical structure. Thus, Kalam Jamaah term of address in kinship cannot refuse this influences. It arises an interesting phenomena because in one hand they try to maintain their traditions and culture while in other hand they caruiot ·refuse to use other language or variety of language as a part of culture in their everyday life including term of address in kinship.
