Abstract

The supremacy of Victorian doctrine about heterononnativity has been the crucial issue in queer criticism. Heteronormativity states that the right sexual relationship is heterosexual marriage and otherwise is considered as wrong. Since it has been the strong nonn in society, the discrimination toward homosexual appears. The discrimination causes some queer people have no courage to express their love and choose to hide it forever. Thomas Mann's Death in Venice is one of some novel that contains the homosexual love story between the main character Gustav von Aeschenbach and Tadzio, the young boy whom he falls in love with. Since he lives in the heterosexual society, von Aschenbach's love becomes complicated because it against the rule of heterononnativity. Using the concept of heterononnativity by Michael Warner, this thesis aims to analyze the influence of heterononnativity in von Aschenbach's love and how he deals with the complicated love.
