Abstract

This study aims to know how overlapping happens in the talk show. The data take from you tube video record and was transcribed. The main objective of this study is to analyze the interaction between the host, the co-host, the guest, and also the fourth people in the Mel's Update show whether the overlapping occur during the interaction. In analyzing the interaction, the writer using semiinstitutional discourse: the case of talk shows by Ilie (1999), am initial characterization of the organization of turn taking in conversation by Sacks (2004), and Sacks et.al (1974) to get the results. The concerning objects of the study using qualitative method. The results of the study show that the overlapping conversation happen during the talk show by several ways such as the interaction between the host-co-host, the host-the guest, the co-host and the guest, the guest and the guest, and the fourth people and the guest. Not all of the theory of Sack's occur because the background of the show to entertain the audience taken from the life of famous people and also advertise a product during the show. Thus, the overlapping during the interaction should be minimized because it could made the duration of the show become longer.
