Abstract

Background: Acharan sulfate, a new glycosaminoglycan isolated from the giant snail, Achatina fulica which is from Kediri, East Java, Indonesia, playa big role in wound healing process, becaU';e it can promote re-epithelialization. In dentistry, there are many problems or treatments which is related to injuries, such as injury after tooth extraction, after scalling, traumatic injuries, stomatitis, lesions in oral mucous, etc. Because of this problems, this study may be able to prove these effect, so it can be developed as an alternative therapy for injuries in oral mucous. Purpose: The aim of this study is to prove that extract of snail mucous (Achatina fulica) which is locally isolated from Kediri will increase the number of basal epithelial cells of the wound incision in the back of white male rats of wistar strain. Method: This research was done by in-vivo experimental laboratoris, using 14 white male rats of wistar strain that given an incision injury with a length of ± 2 cm and depth of ± 2 mm in the back of the experimental animals. They were divided into two treatment groups, that are group 1, incision wounds were given saline solution as group control and group 2, incision wounds were given extract of snail mucous (Achatina fulica) with protein (crude acharan sulfate) level is 86,74 %. This treatment both are given 3 ml once a day for five days. On sixth day doing a biopsy to make a histological specimens of back skin of the rats, then evaluate microscopically to account the number of basal epithelial cells of the wound incision in the back of white male rats of wistar strain. And then doing statistical analysis with independent samples t-test with a = 0,05. Results: There were a significant differences between two treatment group, that are the number of basal epithelial cells in control group and extract group (p<0,05). Conclusion: Extract of snail mucous (Achatina fulica) with protein (crude acharan sulfate) level is 86,74 % increase the number of basal epithelial cells of the wound incision in the back of white male rats of wistar strain.
