Abstract
Background. Oral candidiasis is a common opportunistic infection of the oral cavity caused by an overgrowth of Candida species, the commonest being Candida albicans. The fungal infections could be life-threatening in immunocompromised patients. Candida albicans is the most frequent fungi in the oral cavity. Green tea is a 'non-fermented' tea, and contains more catechins, than black tea or oolong tea. It has many health benefits, one of them is antifungal effect. Purpose. The aim of this study is to account the inhibition effect of green tea extract towards Candida albicans. Method. This research is done with the help a volunteer, man or woman, who used to wear removable denture after 12 months and does not have systemic disease. The lesion is swabbed from redness mucosa that contacts the fitting surface of the denture. The swabbed material is incubated in sabourauds's dextrose agar to let the Candida albicans to grow. Green tea leaf extract is diluted in different concentrations100%, 50%,25%,12,50%, 6,25%, 3,13%,1,56% and 0,78%. After 24 hours inhibition zone will be measured. Result. The result of this study was that the minimum inhibitory concentration of green tea extract to inhibit Candida albicans growth was of 12,5% and minimum bactericidal concentrationwas of 25%. Conclusion. Green tea extract can inhibit growth of Candida albicans.
