Skripsi thesis, UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA.
Abstract
Background. Preliminary phytochemical screening test results that Averrhoa carambola L. extract contains flavonoid compounds, which is catechin that plays a role
in the formation of dentf)l plaque by inhibiting the synthesis of ISG (Insoluble glucan) by Gates so it can reduce dental plaque formation. Piper betle L. extraot oontains chavicol which disrupt the three-dimensional structure of proteins and make it into a random structure without any damage to the structure of the covalent framework so the proteins were denatured and caused a damage' to the biological activity of the bacteria
and make the bacteria can not perform its function well.
Purpose. To determine the ability of the inhibition of Averrhoa carambola L. extract and Piper betle L. extract on the growth of Streptococcus mutans.
Method. The method type used is experimental research laboratories. Number of samples are 48 samples which are dropped with Averrhoa carambola L extract 30%, Piper betle L. Extract 10%, and khlorhexidine gluconate (Minosep 0.2%) and then determine the magnitude of growth inhibition zone of Streptococcus mutans. Results. The inhibition growth of Streptococcus mutans by using the of Averrhoa carambola L. extract 30% is higher than the inhibition growth of Streptococcus mutans by Piper betle L.extract 10%. Conclusion. An Averrhoa
carambola L. extracts can be used as antibacterial substances against Streptococcus mutans.
