Abstract

English language is very important. It is one of the world's international languages that have so many speakers. Learning English is becoming more important nowadays, as people are starting to realize the importance of mastering English. They need to communicate to other people from abroad. They even want to look smart, sophisticated and educated if they can speak English. Young people, old people, and everybody learn English. In the school, in language course, or even at their own home, children were taught English at a very young age. Junior high school has a good chance to make students become fluent in English. It is an early stage to learning about English language. The school tried to serve some good facilities to make students get better in learning English language and also provide good teachers to their students. After 5 weeks doing an internship at SMP Negeri 4 Waru Sidoarjo, the writer got a priceless experience to be a real English teacher to Junior high school students, how to teach and how to explain the materials. The writer could also feel how to be a real teacher. A teacher's work as not simple as what the writer was thinking before. Being a teacher is not only delivering the material, but also being a designer of teaching and learning activity. Teacher designed how she/he should conduct the class, where she would take the class to, and what she would ask the class to do. She mixed things up to make an appropriate teaching method for the students. She also has to be able to teach enjoyably for the students even if the facilities were so limited. In Warn, although the school has limited facilities the students have English skill well, means that the average of students who understood English was quite big, so it makes the writer easily to practice her English in the classroom. She sometimes spoke English combine with Indonesian. Nevertheless, the writer tried to encourage them to keep studying and to speak English. In addition, during the internship, the writer was also encouraged to practice being both a friend and a guardian for the students. This close relationship will influence the student's behavior during the lesson. Being a guardian in classroom, the writer had to be assertive, mature, discipline, and gentle to the students so that she could manage the class while she was teaching. Being friend outside the classroom, the writer had to be creative, open-minded, understanding and friendly to the students. Considering the experience and knowledge that the writer obtained from the internship at SMP Negeri 4 Warn Sidoarjo, the writer recommend the English Diploma study program to allow the diploma students to take the internship program at this school. The internship students at this school was given the opportunity not only to learn how to become a teacher, but also there were chances to establish the networking between the students as a personal and the people in the school.
