Abstract

EFFECT OF YOGA (ASANAS AND PRANAYAM►S) ON BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVEL IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS PATIENTS AT WORKSITE OF PACAR KELING HEALTH CENTER SUR►BAYA A Quasy Experiment Stady By Dian May Wijayaati Typc 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a situation of •iperglikemia caused by an impaired insulin secretion, peripherai insulin resistance and obesity. Exercise causes profound changes in glucose homeostasis. One of recornmended physical exercise is yoga (asanas and pranayamas). Yoga (asanas and pranayainas) has been suggested as a complementary and alternative treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Yoga (Asanas and Pranayamas) on blood glucose level in patients with type 2 13iiabetes Mellitus at worksite of Pacar Keling Health Center Surabaya. This study used a quasy experimental design with 16 people as the sample which divided into two groups (experimental and control group) by means purposive sampling. Yoga (asanas and pranayamas) practiced for 60 minutes every 3 days up to 3 wecks. A stnictured questionnaire and blood gitiCOSC tcst were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed by using Wilcoxon signed rartk test and Mann Whitney test with significant value of p<0.05. The result showed that there was an effect of yoga (asanas and pranayamas) on dccreased blood glucose level but this result wasn't significant. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test result showed that there was a differences between pre-post in the experimental group (P 0.012), Mann Withney Test clid't show that there was a significant differences between experimental group and control group (P = 0,130) lt can be concluded that yoga (asanas and pranayamas) affected blood glucose level in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients. Type 2 diabetcs mellitus paticnts is recommended to apply yoga (asanas and pranayamas). Further experiment should involve larger respondents and bencr measurement to obtain more accurate result.
