Abstract

Background : Increasing of angiogenesis which measured by calculatingmicrovascular density (MVD) is associated with the tendency of tumor tometastasize, recurrence and unfavourable prognosis. The prognosis of patients withwell-differentiated thyroid carcinoma in dr.Soetomo General Hospital is detenninedby the AMES criteria.Objective : To evaluate the correlation between MVD and prognosis based onAMES criteria in well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma.Method : This is a cross-sectional study. Microvascular density of welldifferentiated thyroid carcinoma specimens from the paraffin blocks were stainedwith factor VIII antigen an then counted using a light microscope under a 200 timesmagnification field . Prognosis of the related patients based on AMES criteria wasnoted from the medical records. All paraffin blocks of well-differentiated thyroidcarcinoma tissue from the patients underwent surgery at dr.Soetomo GeneralHospital Surabaya from January 2005 to Febmary 2006 were included in this study.The data were analyzed and a linear regression statistical test with a significancelevel ofp<0.05 was used.Result : All specimens from patients with favourable prognosis demonstrated aMVD of :s;8 with a mean of 4.4±2.1 and all those with unfavourable prognosisshowed a MVD of ~ 11 with a mean of 14.7±3.0 per field view. The mean ofMVDin papillary type thyroid carcinoma was 8.7±4.4 whereas in follicular type was16.0±3.9 per field view.Conclusion : There is a correlation between MVD and unfavourable prognosis inwell-differentiated thyroid carcinoma based on AMES c1iteria (p = 0.0001,correlation coefficient 0.74). The MVD in unfavourable prognosis was significantlyhigher than in favourable prognosis. The frequency of MVD in follicular typethyroid carcinoma was greater than papillary type (p = 0.0001, coefficientcorrelation 0.42)
