Abstract
"Objective : Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an inflamatory disease of nasal mucosa which mediated by Imunoglobulin E (IgE) as a response to an allergic exposure. One important sign of an allergic process is the infiltration of inflamatory cells particullary eosinophils into the mucosal tissue, and then release a variety of basic proteins that can damage the nasal mucosal epithelium. The process of migration and infiltration of inflammatory cells was strongly influenced by the role of regulated upon activation normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES). Evaluation of AR can be done by calculating total symptoms score (TSS) and RANTES levels in nasal secretion. The relation between the levels of RANTES nasal secretion with TSS in AR patients at Allergy—Irnmunology Division of Otorhinolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) Outpatient Department of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya still unclear. The purpose of this study is to prove the relation between the levels of RANTES nasal secretion with TSS in AR patients. Methods : Research conducted at Allergy—Immunology Division of Otorhinolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) Outpatient Department of Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya in July 2015 to December 2015. Samples were taken by consecutive sampling and obtained 49 samples for RANTES levels measurement and TSS. Level of RANTES in nasal secretion were measured by ELISA method with human RANTES ELISA Kit reagen of Elabscience with catalog number E-EL-H0023. Total symptoms score were obtained by accumulating all the symptoms either nasal symptoms or non nasal symptoms. Data of RANTES is in interval scale, TSS in ordinal scale and performed statistical analytic with correlation of Pearson. Result : Mean (SD) RANTES of this study is 17,68 (8,24) pg/m1 and mean (SD) of TSS is 11,37 (3,15 pg/ml). Scatter plot diagram proved that data in normal distribution. The results of Spearman test showed that there was significant correlation between the levels of RANTES nasal secretion with TSS in AR patients (p=0.002), with correlation coefficient (r) =0.426. Conclusion : There was positive relationship with moderate correlation between the levels of RANTES nasal secretion with TSS in allergic rhinitis patients."
