Abstract

Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is one of Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (NIDDM) chronic complication. PVD causes continuous morbidity, pain at walking and at rest, pedal edema, and slow healing ulcers which lead to disability and even death. In the long term, PVD impairs both subjective and objective Quality of Life. Thus the goal of treatment ofDM with PVD is to prevent disease progression and improve the patients quality of life. The causes of PVD are multifactorials, and mainly related to several factors such as genetic, hypertension, DM, dyslipidemia and smoking. Atherosclerosis disease and changes in haemorheology (athero-haemorheology) are the main causes of PVD in NIDDM. A study conducted at Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya showed that among 2,300 patients with NIDDM, 67% had dislipidemia which is a risk factor of atherosclerosis, but only 3.8% had cellulitis and gangrene complications. This study evaluate the impact of atherohaemorheology changes on diabetic angiopathy and its quality of life, using pathometabolic research experiment approach with pre and post test control group design.
