Abstract

Background: The incidence of thyroid cancer is quite high in woman. The etiology is unknown, but there are many risk factors which can increase the incidence, such as age at menarche, nulliparous, more than three parity, abortions, age at first delivery, age at last delivery, age at menopause, oral contraceptive, infertile drug. Objective: To analyze woman reproductive factors as thyroid cancer risk factors Method : A case control study. The cases were women under 65 year old who had thyroid cancer and the controls were women who had hemorrhoid and healthy women, datas were collected by interview using a questionnaire sheet at the Outpatient Clinic, Department of Surgery Dr Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Result: Throughout September to December 2003, there were 20 women of case group and 40 women of control group. The most frequent age who had thyroid cancer was between 31-40 years old. After univariant and multivariant analysis there were only three risk factors that were statistically significant, which were nulliparous OR=II,4 (95%CI 1,6508-78,3767), more than three parity (2: 3) OR=5,85 (95%CI 1,2225), and oral contraceptive OR=6,897 (95%CI 0,9522-49,9584). Other factors like age at menarche OR=l,3 (95%CL5935-2.7458), abortions OR=8,4 (95%CL2945- 239.4), age at first delivery OR=1 ,3 (95%CL8449-2.0372), and age at last delivery OR=0,97 (95%CL6293-1.3051 , age at menopause, and infertile drugs can not be analysed. Conclusion: Some of the woman reproductive factors were significantly associate to the risk factors of thyroid cancer. They were nullipara, more than three parity, and oral contraceptive. Others woman reproductive factors did not appear as a thyroid cancer risk factors, but might be associated with the increase of the the incidence of thyroid cancer.
