Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out the potential of flies from the traditional markets in Surabaya as mechanical vector of protozoa and bacteria which cause diarrhea. Flies were collected from following traditional markets: Genteng Bam Market, Pegirian Market, Pucang Anom Market, Bendul Merisi Market and Manukan Kulon Market. They were collected randomly within 2 hours at every location. All of the captured files were killed by deep freezing at - 20°C for 15 minutes. Later, they were immersed in normal saline and shaken for 5 minutes to wash off protozoa and bacteria. The washed fly bodies were then filtered out and the fluid was then examined for protozoa and bacteria. Three families of flies were identified as Muscidae, Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae. Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were isolated from the body of flies which were collected at Manukan Kulon Market. While, Escherichia coli was found at Genteng Barn Market, Pegirian Market, Bendul Merisi Market and Manukan Kulon Market. Salmonella, Shigella and Vibrio cholerae have been found in all above mentioned markets. The qualitative fly density was measured using fly grill on all afore mentioned markets. The secondary data of diarrhea were obtained from Puskesrnas Ketabang, Puskesrnas Pegirian, Puskesmas Pucang Sewu, Puskesmas Jagir, and Puskesmas Manukan Kulon. The study has demonstrated that the fly density was significantly associated \vi th incidence of diarrhea (p=0,014; r=0,949), but there was no correlation between incidence of diarrhea and pathogens which were isolated from the flies (p>0,05).
