Abstract

Most of school-aged children are usually buy some street foods in their school environment. According to nutritional aspect, street foods in school environment can contribute to their growth and achievement. Street foods can also grow their food diversification habits since early. However, there are some unsafe foods in school environment that may lead to foodborne diseases. Their parent and the situation in their families can contribute to their habits. This survey was aimed to analyze the family factors relating to schoolaged children’s habit of buying street foods in their elementary school environment. Design used in this study was a descriptive survey. The population was all parents of students of SDN Airlangga VI Surabaya. Total sample was 50 respondents, taken according to inclusion criteria. The variables were the family factors relating to school-aged children’s habit of buying street foods in their elementary school environment. Data were collected using structured interview and then were analyzed using content analysis. Results showed that the family factors relating to school-aged children’s habit of buying street foods in their elementary school environment were: (1) parents or other family members that give some money to their children in their school, with incident value 98%, (2) parents did not monitor some foods eaten bytheir children in their school, with incident value 88% and (3) parents or other family members had the habit of buying street foods, with incident value 78%. It can be concluded that parents or other family members that give some money to their children in their school is the most significant family factor relating to school-aged children’s habit of buying street foods in their elementary school environment. So, the suggestion that can be given is parents must reduce some money usually given to their children.
