Abstract
Elderly most difficult start to sleep, easily awaken, often spending time in the sleepy stage, and very little time in the dream stage. Sleep mask is a cloth that is designed to cover the eyes to avoid eye from light, other than that inside there are pockets of water that makes the eyelids become cool and relaxed. Purpose this study is to explaining the effect of using sleep mask on the increase of fulfillment the need of sleep in elderly.
This study used pre experimental design. Population was elderly with sleep disorder in UPT PSLU Pasuruan. Sample was recruited using purposive sampling, consists of 11 respondents, taken according to the inclusion.
Independent variable was the fulfillment of sleep in elderly. Data were collected using structured questionnaire before and after the intervention using sleep mask.
This study used PSQI (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) instrument. It differentiates “poor” from “good” sleep by measuring seven areas: subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep
disturbance, use of sleeping medication, and daytime dysfunction. They were analysed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with level of significance p≤0.05.
Result showed that using sleep mask effect to increase of fulfillment the need of sleep (p=0.003). conclusively, using the sleep mask has significant effect to increase of fulfillment the need of sleep in elderly. For the next research about sleep mask, the opinion of respondents about their sleeps quality are proved by instrument more measurable such as EEG (Electroencephalograpy)
