Abstract

The objectives of the research were to determine that Muscid and Calliphorid flies have the potency as mechanical vectors of diarrhea - causing protozoa (Entamoeba histolytica dan Giardia lamblia) dan bacteria (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp dan Shigella spp), and to determine the relationship between the potency with incidence of diarrhea in Sidorujo. Cross sectional study carried out on 32 group samples of flies consisting 10 flies per group which have been captured in August using fly traps . The research was done in 4 subregions in Sidoarjo (Warn, Sidoarjo, Balongbendo and Sedati subregion)which were selected by stratified random sampling. Detection of protozoa used light microscope and detection of bacteria used culture with biochemical test (IS! and IMVIC). Data analysis was done using Chi square with level of significance of 0,05. Descriptively Calliphorid carry diarrhea - causing protozoa and bacteria more than Muscid flies, but statistically the difference is not significant. The big potency of Calliphorid could be cause by the present of the thoracic bristle that is absent on the Muscid. The not significancy of the difference could be associated with several possibilities i.e. similar breeding site, living site, food source site, the present of bristle on the other part of body surface of Muscid flies. The relationship of potency of Muscid and Calliphorid as mechanic vectors of diarrhea - causing protozoa and bacteria with the incidence of diarrhea in Sidorujo were not significant, although descriptively diarrhea - causing protozoa and bacteria were found more in the high level of diarrhea incidence region, than in the low level of diarrhea incidence region. This not significant difference could be caused by several possibilities such as the death of protozoa and bacteria before reaching new hospes, the diarrhea were caused by other factors (beside the protozoa and bacteria on this study), and the human habits . Based on this research results which show the high potency of Calliphorid and Muscid flies to carry many kinds of pathogenic agents which caused diarrhea, there is a need to explore more about the potency.
