Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the influence of continuous fast running and intermittent sprint running exercise to FEVI and FVC. This study used Randomized Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. Samples were grade 2 students of SMK Negeri 2 Makasar, Province of South Sulawesi, from the academic year of 1998/1999. Samples were 90 healthy male students of 16 - 18 years old. Samples were divided into 3 groups, each consisted of 30 students. First group was subjected to continuous fast running, second group was subjected to intermittent sprint running, and third group, served as control, was subjected to no treatment. Exercise in this study was done for 8 weeks. Before the exercise was commenced, FEV1 and FVC in each sample were measured as preliminary data (pretest). At the end of exercise period, FEVI and FVC in all samples were measured (posttest). Data obtained from those measurements was then processed using descriptive statistics and anova test with the level of significance of 0.05. Results of data analysis showed that continuous fast running and intermittent sprint running exercise may increase both FEV1 and FVC. Intermittent sprint running increased FEVI (p=0.000) and FVC (p=0.000) more than continuous fast running. Results of descriptive statistic test showed that intermittent sprint running increased FEVI of 5.67% after 8 weeks exercise, while continuous fast running increased FEVI only of 3.06%. The same statistical test also showed that intermittent sprint running increased FVC of 5.52% after 8 weeks exercise, while continuous fast running. increased FVC of 2.33%.
