Skripsi thesis, UNIVERSITAS AIRLANGGA.
Abstract
Children with autism have problems in meeting the needs of their sleep, which may cause the imbalance of neurotransmitters (Gaba, Melatonin, Serotonin) that have very important role in the process of sleep and alert. The
purpose of this study was to prove the fulfillment of sleep in children with autism after being given with acupressure at SDLB Bangkalan.
This study was a pre-experimental design. The population was children with autism in SDLB Bangkalan. Sampling was taken by purposive technique.
Sample of respondents in the study were 8 individuals, according to inclusion criteria. The independent variable was acupressure, and the dependent variable was the sleep needs. Data were taken using questionnaire, and for the quality of sleep we used Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and for quantitative data we used the observation sheet. Data obtained were analyzed using Willcoxon
Signed Rank Test with significance level of p < 0.05
The study showed that acupressure may improve sleep quality (p = 0.007) and quantity (p = 0.011) in children with autism. In conclusion, acupressure may improve sleep needs in children with autism because the stimulation on acupoint
led to an increase of electric power in the body, resulting in the release of endorphins, which will trigger a calming response. Further studies are expected to higher number of samples to obtain better validity.
