Abstract

Breastfeeding is a process that occur naturally but some women have some difficulties in doing that. Breastfeeding technique holds an essential role in addressing this problem. A lot of woman have lack of information about breastfeeding technique, this condition might have unfavorable impact on newborns and mothers. Health education is highly required to help post-partum women breastfeed their newborns optimally. The health education can be carried out through demonstration method. The demonstration method shows to mothers on how to perform a procedure properly. The purpose of this study is to investigate an effect of health education on breastfeeding technique among post¬partum women at Melinda Maternity Center Kediri. The study was used pre-experimental approach using one group pretest-posttest design involving 20 respondents in which sample was drawn with purposive sampling method. Data were collected by observation sheet and then analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with significance level 0.05. The results showed that health education positively influenced breastfeeding technique among post-partum women. Before receiving health education, most women performed breastfeeding technique improperly, but after receiving health education, they could perform the technique better than before. It can be proved by the result of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test p = 0.000 In conclusion, health education was greatly correlated with breastfeeding technique as most women acquired new knowledge regarding breastfeeding technique and then implement it properly. Thus, nurses are expected to optimize health education among post-partum women.
