Abstract
Cholesterol is required by the body to maintain health. However, if blood cholesterol level is more than 200 mg/dl, cholesterol may induce various diseases, such as atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke. Appropriate nutrient strategy may provide alternative treatment for hypercholesterolemic patients, preventing them from continuous dependence on hypolipidemic drugs. Pineapple has the highest capability among other fruits to reduce fat.
This research used quasi-experimental design. Population comprised all hypercholesterolemic patients in General Health Center (Pusat Kesehatan Umum/PKU) Karangasem Muhammadiyah Paciran Lamongan. Total samples were
15 respondents devided to 3 groups 100 gr., 200 gr., 300 gr., taken according to inclusion criteria. The independent variable of this study was pineapple juice, and
the dependent variable was blood cholesterol level. Data were collected using respondent observation. Data were analyzed using Paired T-test and One-way
Anova with significance level of α ≤ 0.05.
Results revealed that among 100 gr, 200 gr, and 300 gr pineapple juice given to the patients, it was found that 100 gr pineapple juice could not reduce blood cholesterol level in hypercholesterolemic patients (p = 0.807), while 300 gr
pineapple juice resulted in the most prominent reduction of blood cholesterol.
Conclusion, 300 gr pineapple juice is the most effective dose among two other doses (100 gr and 200 gr). Further studies are suggested to include other variables, such as obesity, diet, and stress.
