Abstract

The effect of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on blood glucose, superoxide dismutase (SOD), heat shock protein 70 (Hsp 70) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF¬a) on diabetes mellitus type 2 patients was investigated. An experimental laboratory study was performed at LAKESLA in Surabaya. Threeteen diabetic patients were exposed to 100% 02 at 2,4 ATA, 3x30 minutes with interval 5 minutes breathing air, once a day on ten consecutive days, and threeteen diabetic patients man as control with normoksia normobaric. The blood glucose, SOD, Hsp 70 and TNF-a were evaluated before the first session, after the fifth session and after the tenth session HBO exposures. The measurement of blood glucose using enzimatic methode, SOD using spectrophotometry, measurement of Hsp 70 and TNF-a using ELISA. On HBO group, blood glucose decreased significantly (p<0.05) from (mean 179.85 standart deviation 72.43) before the first session to (mean 106.23 standart deviation 27.84) after the fifth session, and did not increase significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 106.23 standart deviation 27.84) on the fifth session to (mean 115.31 standart deviation 44.81) after the tenth session. SOD did not increase significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 1.06 standart deviation 0.15) before the first session to (mean 2.28 standart deviation 0.61) after the fifth session, and did not decrease significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 2.28 standart deviation 0.61) on the fifth session to (mean 2.11 standart deviation 0.56) after the tenth session. Hsp 70 did not increase significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 1.67 standart deviation 0.31) before the first session to (mean 1.71 standart deviation 0.27) after the tenth session In this group TNF-a did not increase significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 0.43 standart deviation 0.04) before the first session to (mean 0.43 standart deviation 0.04) after the fifth session, and did not decrease significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 0.43 standart deviation 0.04) on the fifth session to (mean 0.41 standart deviation 0.04) after the tenth session. On the evaluated control group, the change value blood glucose level did not decrease significantly (p>0.05) from (mean 179.85 standart deviation 72.43) before the first session to (mean 167.23 standart deviation 41.39) after the tenth session, and the other parameters change value did not differ significantly (p>0.05). Five consecutive days of hyperbaric oxygenation is more effective and efficient than hyperbaric oxygenation for ten consecutive days in DM type 2.
