Abstract

Mental retardation is skill shortcoming during growth period that affects intelligence at all levels, including cognitive, language, motor and social skills. Below normal intelligence in mentally retarded children affects the ability of self help skills, including tooth brushing capabilities. Fading behavior modification techniques can improve the ability to brush the teeth. Fading technique is done by providing full assistance in tooth brushing and then the assistance is reduced gradually. This study aims to determine the effect of fading techniques on tooth brushing skill in mentally retarded children in Ponsos Tuna Grahita, Kalijudan, Surabaya. The design used was quasi experimental. Population was all mental retardation children who obstacles in tooth brushing capabilities. Sampling technique was done using purposive sampling, recruiting as many as 18 respondents, who were divided into 9 treatment respondents and 9 control group respondents, according to inclusion criteria. The independent variable was fading technique and the dependent variable was the ability of tooth brushing. Data were collected with observation. Data analysis was performed by Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney test. Wilcoxon test results on the ability of tooth brushing in the treated group showed p = 0.011 < 0.05 and in the control group p = 0.83 > 0.05. The Mann Withney test results showed no difference between control and treatment group, as shown by p value = 0.002 <0.05 In conclusion, fading technique affects the ability of tooth brushing in mentally retarded children in Ponsos Tuna Grahita Kalijudan Surabaya because the fading technique changed mal-adaptive behavior in mentally retarded child into an adaptive manner.
