Abstract

Back ground : Axillary dissection done as a breast cancer treatment usually have a negative pathology results. Extensive axillary dissection often gives several morbidity such paraestheia, serum collection and lymph edema. Recent study showed the importance of axillary staging pre operatively to reduce unnecessary extensive axillary dissection. Although physical examination is one of routine procedure in axillary staging, it is not accurate. Evolution in ultrasound machine hopefully has diagnostic value in axillary staging pre operative. Objective : To find a non invasive method in axillary staging for breast cancer. Method : Cross sectional study in breast cancer women 20-65 year old, with < 5 cm tumor. Done at Dr. Soetomo Hospital and Klinik Onkologi Surabaya on August -December 2002. SPSS.co. was used as data programmer and the data was analyzed statistically by chi-square system. Result : From examination of thirty one patients included in this study the sensitivity of physical examination (PE) - USG in crxillary's staging was 60%, the specificity was 100% and the accuracy was 93%. In contrast the sensitivity of PE - pathology result (PR) was 18,2%, the specificity was 80% and the accuracy was 49%. The sensitivity of USG - PR was 18,2%, the specificity was 60% and the accuracy was 47%. Significantly there was no different value between physical examination and USG in pre operative axillary staging. Conclusion : This study suggest that USG is not accurate in pre operative axillary staging as physical examination is, but further study with larger sampling number is still needed
