Abstract

High upper respiratory tract infection incidence in factory using three shift rotating work schedule indicates decreasing immune defense mechanism among workers, which resulting in adaptation failure oftlte workers to tircarliau rhythm during night shift work. By employing quasi experimental research design and using similar working unit workers who never experiencing night shift work as a control, this study attempt to assess effect of circadian rhythm changes to immune defense mechanism during night shift Samples were selected among male workers, unmarried, 20 - 25 years old with good health status and no psychological disturbances. Response Cortisol hormone was used as stress indicator, and cellular respons of monocyt, lymphocyt, neutrophyl, and NK cell were used as inunune response indicators. Data ware collected during 5 days working day This study SUAAest that cortisol hormone and neutrophyl cell play as an importance indicators in the circadian rhythm among workers. It was figurized in 4 different patterns according to immune response , which also relate to coping mechanism . Two p31terns appear in study group. The first is consider as adapted to circadian rhythm group which suggesting the development of coping strategy. The second group shows high response of cortisol with low response of neutrophyl cell caused by suppression of cortisol hormone. The latter consider as adapted group. The study reveals that circadian rhythm changes can play a.S a stressors for rotating shift worker but can be adapted depends on adaptation ability. Unadapted workers show positive response on neurohormonal which suppress cellular immunity.
