Abstract
Mental retardation is a generalized disorder appearing before adulthood, characterized by significant impaired cognitive functioning and Intelligence Quotient score under 70. Children with Mental Retardation make their parent felt anxiousness. peer group support is one way to chenge anxiety level by provided social support to the parents. The objective of research was to analyze the change of anxiety level in parents who have children with Mental Retardation used Peer Group Support. This study used A Quassy-Experimental design. Population were parents who have children with mental retardation at SLB Dharma Wanita Madiun. The sample was recruited with purposive sampling consist of 12 respondents according the inclution criteria were devided into treatment and control groups. Independent variable was peer group support and dependent variable was anxiety level. Data were collected with questionnaire and analyzed by using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney U Test with level of significance <0,05. The Result of Wilcoxon test showed there are differences of anxiety level before and after intervention in treatment group (ρ = 0,026). The Result of Wilcoxon test showed there are no differences of anxiety level before and after intervention in control group (ρ = 0,317). Mann-Whitney test showed significance level (ρ) = 0,011. It means peer group support influences anxiety level of respondent. It can be concluded that peer group support can change anxiety level through support system from peer group support. Futher research could be given peer group support with leaflet about Mental Retardation for the parent. It will help parent to understand about Mental Retardation.
