Abstract

There is general agreement that patient personal characteristics are important in explaining and predicting dental patient behaviors, but there is less agreement about which patient personal characteristics are the most important. The objectives of the study are to define the most important patient personal characteristics in explaining and predicting dental patient behaviors and to develop a more integrative model of dental patient behavior in the puskesmas (community health centre). The subjects of the study were 404 adult new patients of the puskesmas in South Jakarta District. In this field study, research method was cross-sectional. The data were gathered through a set of questionnaire in a repeated measure way according to their visits. The independent variable was the patient personal characteristics (patient cognition according to health belief model, dental fear, previous dental experiences, and patient's felt need) The dependent variable was the patient's t:.:-eatment behaviors (patient-dentist interaction, patient satisfaction, and patient compliance) . The confounding variables were patient' s demographic factor, social status and the dental health services they were provided. The interviews to some patients and observations on treatment process were conducted as complementary. The results showed that previous dental experiences were the best predictor for patient-dentist interaction, and patient satisfaction. While the perceived susceptibility (one of the variables of patient cognition) was the best predictor for patient c ompliance. From the study, a model of dental patient behavior has been developed. It is suggested, the patient's perception of susceptibility and previous dental treatment should be considered in the dental treatment process.
