Abstract

Chronic Obstructif Pulmonary Disease (COPD) remains a major public heatlh problem. The majority of sufferers experience out of breath phenomenon due to obstruction of the airway causing ineffective breathing pattern. Beside medicines and the other care methods, sufferers also need lung rehabilitation to reduce breathlessness symptoms. One of the methods that can be applied is pursed lips breathing. The objective of this study was to explain the effect of pursed lips breathing to decrease complaints of dyspnea in patients with COPD by observing respiratory rate and complaints of dyspnea with clinical COPD questionnaire (CCQ). This research starts from 12 December 2012 to 10 January 2013 at Outpatient Pulmonary unit II, Pulmonary Hospital Surabaya. The design used in this research was pre-experiment to find out how pursed lips breathing can decrease complaints of dyspnea in patients with COPD. There were 12 subjects, recruited using purposive sampling. Data were collected by observation sheet and analyzed statistically using paired t-test with significant level α≤0,05. Statistical test showed a significant effect of pursed lips breathing on respiratory rate starting from first week to second week (p= 0,00). There was also significant effect of pursed lips breathing on decrease complaints of dyspnea as measured with CCQ starting from first week to second week (p=0,00). It is apparent that pursed lips breathing has significant effect on decrease tachypnea in respiratory rate and complaint of dyspnea. Further research is recommended to investigaate the role of family in COPD patient compliance to do pursed lips breathing.
