Abstract

The research was done in the laboratory of the Department of Biochemistry School of Medicine, Airlangga University and the Surabaya Urban Health Laboratory. Fourty male rats, 3 months old and weighted around 200 grams were used. 5 rats chosen at random were used as base data control group. The r~st, 35 rats, were fed for 6 weeks to become hypercholesterolemic, then 5 rats chosen at random were analyzed. The last 30 hypercholesterolemic rats weredivided into 3 groups (10 rats each) : (1) Po as control group continue the hypercholesterolemic feeding; (2) P1 as treatment 1 group continue thehypercholesterolemic feeding and supplemented with 0.5 mL tuna fish oil; (3) P2 as treatment 2 group continue the hypercholesterolemic feeding and supplemented with I mL tuna fish oil. Treatments were given for 4 weeks. Feeds were made isocaloric and given ad libitum. Determination for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triacylglycerol using Boehringer-Manheim Kit, GPO-PAP and CHOD-P AP. Dataobtained were analyzed using descriptive statistic and Manova test, then continued with LSD test with 5% significant degree. Data obtained from this research show that tuna fish oil supplementation reduced the blood total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triacylglycerol, and significantly increased HDL cholesterol (p > 0.05).We concluded that supplementation of tuna tish oil containing ro-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) can reduce blood total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triacylglycerol, and significantly increased HDL cholesterol (p > 0.05).
