Abstract

Communication is a very important and meaningful process in human relationships. In nursing profession, therapeutic communication is the process which nurses use a planned approach to approximate the patient. Patient with ventilator attached has verbal communicate disruption because of the endotracheal tube or tracheostomy. The purpose of this study is to know how far the relationship between therapeutic communication and the ventilator-mounted patient's response in ICU of Adi Husada Undaan Surabaya Hospital. This study uses descriptive analytic with cross-sectional approach, the populations of this study was all nurses of ICU. There were 26 respondents’ samples were collected using Concecutive sampling methods, the independent variable is the therapeutic communication and the dependent variable is ventilator-mounted patient's response. This study was conducted from December 12th, 2012 to January 20th, 2013. The data were collected by using direct observation. The data were analyzed using Spearman's rho statistical test with significance p <0.05. The analysis showed p = 0.002 and r = 0.589, which means H1 was accepted and Ho was rejected, it means that there is a relationship between therapeutic communication and the ventilator-mounted patient's response. The conclusion of this study is therapeutic communication is important for improving the quality of patient care according to the needs of patients, although ventilator-mounted patient can not communicate verbally.
