Abstract

Infants are the group of age that are vulnerable to health and nutrition problems. They most often suffer from malnutrition because this group experience growth and development rapidly so they need high nutrition. The infant nutrient status is influenced by many factors such as the breastfeeding pattern and the providing supplement meal pattern. Both of the breastfeeding pattern and the providing supplement meal pattern are influenced by the mother’s behavior. The disadvantage behaviors of mothers in breastfeeding and providing supplement meal results from the lack of knowledge, the existence of misleading myth, lack of information about the best way of breastfeeding and providing supplement meal , inadequate posyandu facilities , and the attitudes and behavior of the health functionary. This study used cross sectional design. Population was all mothers who are breastfeeding and providing supplement meal to their infants of 7 to12 months at Nuri Posyandu, in Kademangan Puskesmas. Samples are consisted of 16 mothers with their infants, enrolled based on inclusion criteria. The independent variables were the breastfeeding pattern and the providing supplement meal pattern. The dependent variable was the nutritional status of the infant of 7 to 12 month. Data were collected by questionnaire and the infant weight was interpreted using Road to Health Card (KMS). Data were analyzed by means of Spearman’s Rank Test with significance level of 0.05. Result showed a strong correlation between the breastfeeding pattern and the nutritional status of the infant of 7 to 12 months (p = 0.001). An adequate correlation was also found between the providing supplement meal pattern and the nutritional status of the infant of 7 to 12 months (p = 0.036). In conclusion, both of the right way of breastfeeding and the right way of providing supplement meal, have an important role to the good infant nutritional status. Further studies should use other designs that enable data collecting of more than once in order to obtain better reliability in accuracy.
