Abstract

"The objective of this study was to examine the effect of prolonged exhaustive exercise to blood lymphocyte count and the diameter of spleen white pulp. This study was true experimental laboratories with post test only control group design. Twenty eigth male rats (Rattus norvegicus) of Wistar strain divided into four groups : the control group of fifteen days (KI), the treatment group of fifteen days (PI), the control group of thirty days (K2) and the treatment group of thirty days (P2). Treatment was given as exhaustive swimming with six percent of body weight load on their tail. After treatment, the blood was collected to examine malondialdehyde (MDA) level in serum and blood lymphocyte co.mt. Then the animal was sacrified with decapitation method and the spleen was removed. Spleen was processed to histological preparation with haematoxylin eosin staining. The diameter of spleen white pulp Was measured on light microscope with lOOx magnification. The data were analized with one way ANOVA (a=O,05). The result shown that the treatment caused oxydative stress based on blood MDA level. The treatment for fifteen days decreased diameter of spleen white pulp, but blood lymphocyte count still in normal range. The treatment for thirty days increased diameter of spleen white pulp and no significant difference with control group, also increased blood lymphocyte count. The conclusion of this study was the prolonged exhaustive exercise could modulated immune system based on blood lymphocyte count and diameter of spleen white pulp."
