Abstract

Silver sulfadiazine 1%, a treatment for burn wound healing in the hospital. Beside its effectiveness, this agent has toxigenic effect. Topical papaya is the pulp of papaya fruit that mashed and applied daily into burn wound. It appears to be effective in desloughing necrotic tissue, preventing burn wound infection, and provide a granulation wound. This study was aimed to know the differences between topical papaya and silver sulfadiazine 1% on the third grade burn wound healing process. Design that used in this study was true experimental design. The sample were 27 guinea pigs, 3 months old, male guinea pigs, separated randomizely into three group. One-control group used normal saline 0,9% and two other treatment groups used topical papaya and silver sulfadiazine. The data were obtained using observation paper based on the sign of inflammation and proliferation and then analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-wallis test. Results showed that there were differences between topical papaya and silver sulfadiazine 1% in erythema (p = 0,00), oedema (p = 0,00), wound fluid (p = 0,00), granulation (p = 0,00) at 3rd day, erythema (p = 0,00) and oedema (p = 0,00) at 7th day, and also in burn wound size (p = 0,00) at 14th day. It can be concluded that using topical papaya was more effective than silver sulfadiazine 1% in third grade burn wound healing and thus supports its tradisional use. For further research there is need to be conducted a microscopically observation of numerous changes in collagen, PMN cell (neutrophile), lymphocyte and monocyte cell, inflammation and proliferation as well as third grade burn wound healing process.
