Abstract

The main problem experienced by children with autism was slow development of socialization ability, so they cannot interact properly. This disability occurs because less of stimulation of common activities which can increase socialization ability because at the special needs school the lessons are focused more on the increase of intelligence ability. Social Play Therapy: Cooperative Play is a therapy given to children with autism to train their cooperation in group playing until they are able to increase their socializationability. This study used pre-experimental design. The population was autist students of school of children with special needs Bangun Bangsa Surabaya. Total sample was 12 respondents taken according to inclusion criteria. The independent variabel was Social Play Therapy: Cooperative Play and the dependent variable was the increase of socialization ability. Data were collected using observation sheet and analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with level of significance of ≤ 0.05. Result showed that the implementation of Social Play Therapy: Cooperative Play could increase socialization ability, in wich the result of statistical test showed significance level p=0.002, indicating that there was difference in the socialization ability between pre-test and post-test. The result of pre-test showed that most of respondents (66,67%) had less socialization ability, while the result of the post-test most of the respondent (83,33%) showed sufficient socialization ability. It can be concluded that Social Play Therapy: Cooperative Play can increase socialization ability. Recommendation for teachers and parents with autist children is that they should give their children Social Play Therapy: Cooperative Play everyday at school or home. Further studies should involve larger number of respondents and use another group game, not only individual one, to increase socialization ability. In addition, parents and therapist should have active role in implementing social playing therapy to increase the social ability in children with autism.
