Abstract

Job satisfaction and motivation are always associated with the work. Dissatisfaction at work can cause a decline in a person’s motivation to their performance. The work motivation is affected by several factors, one which is the leadership style of nurse unit manager. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between leadership style with nurses’s motivation in Surgical Inpatient Wards RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. This study used cross-sectional approach. Forty four subjects were recruited by purposive sampling technique as sample of this study. The independent variable in this study was the leadership style of the nurse unit manager, while the dependent variable in this study was the motivation of nurses. The data were collected using a questionnaire instrument and then analyzed using Chi-Square test statistics. The result showed that goal-oriented leadership style is most widely used in the surgical wards RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. It was also found that most nurses in surgical inpatient wards of Dr. Soetomo Hospital had high work motivation. Additionally, results showed a relationship between nurse unit manager’s leadership style with a motivation of nurses (p = 0,041). It can be concluded that there was a correlation between leadership style of nurse unit manager with work motivation of nursing staff. Further study is expected to involve another variable and use standardized instrument to obtain better result.
