Abstract

The prevalence of cognitive impairment is increasing by year to year, it needs more attention to cope the problem which are influence in daily life. The treatment which are using are the pharmacology of drug and exercise. This treatment can cause side effects for the elderly with impaired cognitive function. One of the treatment that is safe with no side effects is the reminiscence therapy. The purpose of this study is to explain the effect of reminiscence therapy on cognitive function memory in the elderly. The design of this study was pre-experimental design. The population was elderly in nursing homes Hargo Dedali Surabaya. The total sample were 14 respondents whom were inclusion criteria. The sampling technique is purposive sampling method. The independent variable was a reminiscence therapy, the dependent variable was the cognitive function. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using Paired t-test with a significance level of α ≤0.05. The results was indicate a therapeutic effect of the reminiscence therapy of the increase in the elderly with cognitive function ( p = 0.000 ) The conclusions of this study reminiscence therapy may improve cognitive function in the elderly. Institution can apply the reminiscence therapy to help the elderly memories in impaired cognitive function. The future studies could add to the respondents and determine the factors according to the characteristic of respondent.
