Abstract

Introduction: School age children is the group of age prone to dental and oral disease, especially caries. Most of the students who suffer from cavities are caused by the lack of knowledge about how to keep teeth and oral's health. One of the ways is by health education about brushing teeth. The objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of health education using demonstration method and booklet media toward the change of brushing teeth habit in school age children (8- 9 years old). Method: The research design of this study is quasy experiment. The sample is the third grade children of Sumengko state elementary school which belongs to inclusion criteria with 20 children. The sampling technique uses simple random sampling. Data analysis uses wilcoxon signed rank test and mann whitney u test with signification value is a:S0,05 Result: The result of this study shows that there is an advance in knowledge, attitudes and action. In the matter of knowledge, by using wilcoxon signed ranks test shows that there is a change in demonstration group at the rate of p=O,Oll and p=O,OlO in the booklet group. In the matter of attitudes the change rate is p=0,005 for demonstration group and p=0,005 for booklet group. In the matter of action, demonstration group's change rate is p=0,005 and p=0,007 for booklet group. To distinguish the effectiveness of method and media which are used in this study, the writer uses mann whitney test. In the matter of knowledge, it's acquired p=0,224, p=0,699 of the attitudes, p=O,Ol2 of the action. Discuss and Conclusion: Health education of brushing teeth for the school age children can use demonstration method and booklet media. It is better for nurses to combine these methods and media to have a more effective and attractive way in giving health education to advance brushing teeth habits.
