Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease. If the disease is not well controlled, it may result in the disorder of primary and secondary carbohydrate metabolic process in fat and protein. The metabolic process disorder is due to the insufficiency of relative insulin (in type 2 DM) or absolute insulin in type 1 DM (insulin-dependent Diabetes mellitus). Diet is the primary therapy that may suppress the emergence of latent DM and also suppress its primary acute and chronic complications. To prevent the occurrence of complications, knowledge, attitude, and compliance is required. In fact, many patients still have lower compliance to dietary program in DM. The objective of this study was to find correlation between knowledge, attitude, and compliance to diet and the complications of Diabetes mellitus in Diabetic Outpatient Clinic, Dr Ramelan Navy Hospital, Surabaya. This study used cross-sectional design, involving 80 samples who were taken using purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaire and observation. Data were processed and analyzed by means of cross-tabulation with Spearman rho correlation coefficient with level of error of a::; 0.05. Results revealed that knowledge had p = 0.008, attitude p = 0.019, and diet compliance, p = 0.002. This indicated significant correlation between knowledge, attitude, diet compliance and complications in diabetic patients. Related to these findings, evolutions in the process of nutritional therapy should be evaluated, in which blood glucose level, blood lipid level, glycated hemoglobin (HbAIC), blood pressure, and renal function to evaluate are evaluated. Cooperation between nutritionist and diabetic patients should be improved to determine nutritional intervention.
