Abstract

"Objective : this study explored the the protective effects of sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) against the hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride (CC4) in rats (Rattus norvegicus). Design and methods: This study used completely randomized design. 35 rats (Rattus novergicus) divided into 7 groups were 2 control groups and 5 treatment groups. The first and second control groups received CMC I % per oral twice a day for 14 days and in the day fifteenth, the fIrSt control group received olive oil per oral, whereas second control group received CCI4 I mllkg weight per oral to induce liver injury. The first until fifth treatment groups received sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) with gradually dosis 25 mg., 50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg and 150 mg per oral that suspension into CMC I %. Each doses divided into twice per day for 14 days. On day fifteenth, all treatment groups received CCI4 I mllkg weight per oral to induce liver injury. 24 hours later, blood and liver samples were collected to measure SOOT (AST), SGPT (AL T) and y-GT enzymes concentration and to evaluate histophatological of liver injury. Data resulted from blood and liver samples were statically calculated by Kruskal-Wallis test, Speannen correlation test and regression with curve estimation. Result : The results of this study revealed that administration of sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) prevent increased of SOOT (AST), SGPT (AL T) and y-GT enzymes concentration and prevent liver injury compared to second control group, and statically significant. The highest protective effects appeared from second treatment group which received dose 50 mg of sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra). This study also showed that increasing dose of sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) did not increased protective effects, moreover showed the tendency of toxic effects. The Spearman test showed no correlation between dose and indicators in this study. Conclusion: pre treatment with sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) prevent carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury in rats (Rattus norvegicus)"
