Abstract

A chemotherapy effect, nausea and vomiting, is a subjective feeling begins with the appearance of discomfort in the abdomen and followed by the response of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Complementer music therapy is one of non-pharmacological method to reduce nausea and vomiting. Used comfort theory that under pinning the study, the objective of this study was to analyze the effect of complementer music therapy against chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in breast cancer patients. This research used quasy experimental design with pre post test two group design. The independent variable of this study is complementer music therapy, and the dependent variable is the nausea and vomiting. The population was breast cancer patients who experienced chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in Rumkital Dr. Ramelan Surabaya. Sample recruited using consecutive sampling that produced 20. The nausea and vomiting data were collected using Rhodes Index Nausea Vomitting and Retching. The result showed that complementer music therapy effects, the level of nausea and vomiting in the treatment groups is p=0,005, and in control groups is p=0,014. Additionally, there was significant difference between treatment group and control group with p=0,006. It can be concluded that complementer music therapy can reduce chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Further studies are needed using the other non-pharmacologic method or with different types of music as desired by patient.
