Abstract

Menopausal women often experience a decrease in the production of estrogen, progesterone and other sex hormones. Decreased estrogen levels will be followed by a decrease in calcium absorption if the diet is calcium-deficient. This led to calcium re-absorption in bone, resulting in porosity and fragility. Maintaining bone density can be done by undergoing physical activity (exercise) on a regular basis. The purpose of this study was to identify correlation between physical activity with the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal PKK mothers at RT 02 RW 01 Kelurahan Komplek Kenjeran Surabaya. Method used in this study was descriptive analytic. Population comprised all women aged 48-60 years, members of PKK at RT 02 RW 01 Kelurahan Komplek Kenjeran, Surabaya. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique, obtaining as many as 27 respondents. Data obtained were processed using Spearman's Rho with significance value of 0.01 to determine the correlation between both variables. Spearman's Rho test results showed p (Sig.) = 0.000, indicating that physical activity variables ha correlation with the risk of osteoporosis in menopausal PKK mothers. The results of Spearman's Rho test on physical activity produced p-value = 0.000 with r = -0699. In conclusion, physical activity correlates with the risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. PKK cadres can provide health education on the importance of excersice (gymnastics foor elderly) to prevent any risk of osteoporosis.
