Abstract

Breastmilk blockage is one problem that may occur in breastfeeding women. It is caused by several factors, such as strained breastmilk discharge due to infrequent breastfeeding, increased breastmilk production, delayed early breastfeeding, poor attachment, and limited breastfeeding period. The objective of this study was to prove the effect of postpartum breast treatment on overcoming the problem of breastmilk blockage. This was a pre-experimental study. Population comprised physiological primiparous post-partum women in Darmo Hospital. Samples comprised 10 respondents taken using the inclusion criteria. Demographic data were collected using questionnaire. The observation sheet was used to find the condition of breast and breastmilk discharge before and after breast treatment. Statistical analysis was carried out using t-test with significance level ofp::: 0.05. The result revealed p = 0.0000, indicating that post-partum breast treatment can be used to overcome the problem of breastmilk blockage. Therefore, this treatment should be included in the standard procedure in maternity room, Darmo Hospital, Surabaya and also in other hospitals in general. Further studies should involve more respondents and control group to obtain more accurate results.
