Abstract

Decubitus or pressure injury is an important problem that is frequently found in elderly. One factor involved in the occurrence of decubitus is immobility. One of the procedures in the skin care is back rub or massage on the back. However, this technique is less optimally applied, althought it can physiologically provide vasodilative effect on the blood vessels, so that the metabolism can be enhanced, increasing the activity of the elderly, reducing pain and in general reducing the risk of decubitus in this age group. The objective of this study was to investigate the risk of decubitus in elderly after back rub, and the effectiveness of back rub in reducing risk in elderly. This study used quasi eksperimen nonrandomized control group pretest posttest design, with population comprising all elderly at Tresna Folk Home Elderly Pandaan Bangkalan, who were willing to be examined. Sample consisted of 42 individuals. The independent variable was back rub technique and the dependent variable was decubital risk. Data obtained from quetionnare and observation were than analyzed using odd ratio and Paired T test statistical test with significance level p~ 0.05. Result revealed that the risk of decubitus in massaged elderly reduced 1.27 lower than that in those not massaged, while the results of paired T test showed the effect of back rub in treatment group was P=0.053 and control p= 0.055, indicating that back rub had no significant effect on the decubital risk in elderly. This was resulting from the occurrence of organ degeneration, chronic deseases and lower nutritional status among those elderly, so that the back rub massage had no significant effect
